An inquiry contract for an English paper about lobbing that I wrote and quite like

When in the course of the high school curriculum, it becomes necessary for one person to dissolve the bands of sanity that connect her to the world, and to assume among the Powers of her mind, the insane and irrational station to which the Teachers of English and of Proponents of Research assign her, a decent respect to the knowledge of teacherkind requires that she should declare the topics which are focused on by her research.*

The topic that I will be researching extensively and exhaustingly is lobbying. The right to lobby is set out in a document written a couple of years after the one mentioned under a citizen’s right to petition. I’m going to find how this right to petition is swaying government policy today and how. My position might change a bit when I’m less ignorant of what lobbying actually is.

From reading the Opinions section of the Chicago Tribune fairly frequently, I can gather that lobbying is the efforts of outside influence to influence government legislation. I also know that the current My Pyramid, the guide for a healthy, nutritional diet that our government had created, was influenced by lobbyists and is incorrect. The first fact I believe I can call general knowledge, as dictionary definitions often are. The second fact is the knowledge of at least everyone in my health class, as our teacher has repeated it often enough for the almost sleeping kids to understand. I expect to find that lobbyists have influenced many more government policies on behalf of their special interest groups, and also that some lobbying has positively affected legislation.

One must approach research as a way to answer the questions posed by a lack of knowledge. I would like to know the extent of lobbyist influence on the government and proposed methods of removing corruption from the lobbyists, or if that can’t be helped, removing lobbyists from government.

I do indeed have background knowledge on this topic, but nothing more than any responsible underage citizen would have. Never have I ever researched this topic extensively for a paper or any other sort of formal writing. I super promise. †

*This paragraph heavily influenced by the Declaration of Independence, which rests in the public domain

I am what I am what I am

But what did I want to be in the past? I definitely had some ideas. I remember wanting to be in a relationship by freshman year, but that's not the case. I'm not particularly disappointed about that one as it just hasn't worked out.

Other things: I really loved Nancy Drew at some point, and wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I wanted to solve crimes and be a supergenius and everything. And that didn't work out. Also I've become disillusioned with Nancy when I learned her author was more than one person.

Which brings me here. I've always loved mysteries. Always. Give me a good, plausible mystery and I'm set for a while. My dream career was to be a mystery author, and I always aspired to do that at a young age, leading to predictably unfinished stories about kids trying to find lost gerbils, with themes always heavily borrowed (looking back on one in particular it was almost like plagiarism) from the books I was reading at the time.

My perceptions of the future have changed drastically. I still think it would be cool to be an author, but given my track record of unfinished stories I doubt that's ever going to happen. I've found the awakening of a passion for computer science, and a wide range of interesting careers that I would love to be a part of. My dream now is a position at Google, perhaps a software engineer or something of the sort.

But my present self... that's complicated. To quote Buckminster Fuller: "...I don't know what I am. I know that I am not a category."

I really don't know what I am. Adjectives are insufficient to describe this tired, irritable, odd girl. I'm not a category, I'm a sum of experiences and thoughts and beliefs.

However, I've begun to find myself through these most recent of experiences. I'm an emerging citizen of the world, able to see that these United States are not the best place ever, but that they are indeed a pretty damn good place to live. I've begun to find that the center of the universe is not me. I keep becoming more complex, and I am proud of that.

I think my younger self would disapprove of aspects of me, like my swearing and my atheism and procrastination and lazyness and general un-good-ness, but in other ways, we'd find we still have so much in common. We both love reading and Pokemon and civility and things like that. We both get frustrated with things and overemotional with others.

To add another Fuller quote: "I seem to be a verb."

(Also I don't seem to be any better at staying on topic than my younger self)

Un petit debat de Facebook. -partie un-

Here's how it started:

Sara W - Please put this on your status if you know or love someone who is gay. My wish is that people will understand that being gay is neither a disease nor a choice-people who are gay are not looking for a cure but for acceptance and equal rights. 93% won’t copy and paste this. Will you make it your status for at least one hour...? THIS IS FOR... 6 KIDS WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE BECAUSE THEY WERE BULLIED FOR BEING GAY

Nothing at all wrong here. This is something that I completely believe in but didn't copypaste because I could never let myself copypaste a status, personal principle, but I ramble. It continues innocuously:

M (dunno her) ~ did you wear purple today?
Sara W- Yep
Purple shirt, three purple bracelets, purple earrings, and purple socks

It was wear purple in memory of the gay teens who'd committed suicide because of bullying (i couldn't find my purple shirt :( )

Then bangboompow, OP's cousin comes in:

K-we should love them....but you should understand that it is a choice...and a sin...but we should still love them and show them God.

At which point i break with my homework and write:

Niki Thehufflepuff Wells- I'm sorry if I'm butting in; I really don't know you, but I find it hard to accept your comment. Being gay is not a choice, nor do I believe that it is a sin. I'm sure that it is quite possible to be both religious and gay as the two are not mutually exclusive. One should love their neighbor regardless of their sexual orientation or even their religion, as per God's will. I can understand people perhaps being uncomfortable with the idea of homosexuality, but to regard it as something different from love between man and woman is like saying that Catholicism, for example, is completely and utterly exclusive of Protestantism. They both worship Christ as both gay and straight couples love each other.

OP reenters:

Sara W- K, I love u as my cousin and I respect your opinion but I'm going to have to disagree with you

There we go, Jess. I'll have to write about my feelings tomorrow or sometime, but that's my day right there.

PS~ if K decides that she'd like to respond to me with a whole bunch of conservative ultra-christian crap, I'll edit the post with it. It's amusing in a perverse way

La rentree des classes

et la malaise du septembre.

I've not blogged in a while, and I feel like procrastinating on an essay and a month's worth of Euro notes. I was bored today, and made a semi-objective (lolnotrly) list of my favorite subjects in school based of five criterion: Interesting subject matter, engaging teacher, light homework load, friends in class, and usefulness. Here's the order that it ended up being.

French (*****)
ChemPhys Physics (****)
English (***)
ChemPhys Chem (***)
Gym (***)
Euro (**)
Precalc (*)

God, I hate math class. Especially cuz all were doing now is a big fat Algebra review to which I see no point at all but a chance to read in class and still get an A on the test.

I swear to god, swimming is the only thing keeping me sane these days. Swimming and the discovery that the school library actually has good books like Looking for Alaska in it.

That's a lot of disjointed thoughts. I gotta go back to making up a bunch of crap about the new monarchies of the Renaissance kthxbai.

Je suis une grande nerde

et je ne sais pas la mot pour "Nerd." Mairde.

So... yeah. I really am a big nerd. If you can tell by the title if you're not Jessie, I'm a high school student. Une Americaine. Donc, I don't have year-round school and am currently on summer break. I'm not entirely sure what I'm taking a break from, though. Swimming is/was still going on, all summer long. I still got my Internets in. I read books. Everything's good but really boring, because I'm missing two key things.
1) My friends
2) Un-lazy serum

Most people love summer because they can hang out with their friends all the friggin' time. The problem is setting this sort of thing up. I hate talking on the phone. I'd prefer texting, but I have it not. IMing is good, but you can't do it on the go. And nobody uses email even though I love Gmail to pieces. (I before e except after c...) Also, If I may call attention to the title, I'm a nerd. Consequently, my friends are nerds in the best possible way. Nerds stereotypically and in reality aren't very social. It's kind of hard for anyone to set anything up when everyone's either offline gaming or offline reading. D:. Furthermore, I've had two-a-day practices for swimming pretty much all the damned summer, which was fun, but most people want to go to the pool or the beach and my good suit is at school and mt tankini/board short combo is worrisome, because there's one too many pieces to keep track of. (I love spell check. It keeps me from sounding like a complete idiot.) I miss my friends, in short. I want to wander into the cafeteria in the morning after practice and hang out with them for a while before school. Five days are too long.

On to initiative. Left to my own devices, I am an incredibly lazy person. Nothing would get done except for feeding myself (too much). One only has to look at this blog to see the proof. Most of my posts are from August, and half of them copy/pastes of a story thing I'm working on. (btw, it you wanna read it more, check out my gallery at titanswimr.deviantart.com . I finished the first bit, and it's in there.) Actually, I haven't really worked on it a whole lot more, but the basic plot line of bit 2 is fairly well constructed in my head, as is some bigger-picture stuff that will happen to the members of the Brethren. Ah, hang this paragraph. It has no point.

On to my nerdiness. We got our school books about a week ago, and I've been set on reading all my English books, and they're damned good so far. Oedipus was weird, but a nice exposure of one of my favorite time periods/settings: Ancient Greece. Twelfth Night, I'm proud of myself for getting through that. It's long and dry, but 'twould be funny if performed. I'm halfway through In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez. It's an absolutely awesome book so far, and Jessie, you's danged well better put it on your reading list. It's beautiful. The narrator changes, present tense is used as the voice of one of the characters (and I lovelovelove voice), and the plot contains enough rebellion and love to make this into an Orwellian historical fiction. Just go pick it up. It's really damned, and one of the reasons why I'll love English. Next will probably be Dickens' Great Expectations, and Macbeth afterward. (Yeah, two Shakespeares. Ohemgeebers.) After that will come my little novel for French, tome I of Les Miserables. (It's like, 60 pages! D:) After that, my Computer Science textbook, intended for APCS (AP Computer Science) students.

And now it's half past midnight and I've got eight o'clock practice tomorrow. good night

tl;dr~ I miss my friends and school and like reading my English books. Also I'm a nerd.
